New Study Examines Lasting Impact of Sexual Assault on Mental Health
A recent study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine has examined the lasting impact of sexual assault on mental health. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, surveyed over 1,000 women who had experienced sexual assault and found that they were more likely to suffer from a range of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), years after the assault. The study also found that the severity of the assault was linked to an increased likelihood of experiencing mental health problems.
UC Berkeley Receives Grant to Study Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources
The University of California, Berkeley, has received a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to study the impacts of climate change on water resources in the western United States. The project, led by civil and environmental engineer Claudia Tebaldi, will use climate models to assess how changes in temperature, precipitation, and snowpack will affect water availability and quality in the region. The findings from the study will be used to inform water management planning and policy decisions.
UC Berkeley Researchers Develop New AI Tool to Detect COVID-19 in Wastewater
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have developed a new AI tool that can detect COVID-19 in wastewater. The tool, called DETECTR, uses machine learning algorithms to identify patterns in wastewater that are associated with the presence of the virus. DETECTR can be used to monitor wastewater treatment plants and identify areas where the virus is circulating, even before people start showing symptoms. The tool could be used to help prevent outbreaks and inform public health decisions.
