UC Berkeley to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for students, staff
All University of California, Berkeley students and staff will be required to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or an approved exemption by Aug. 4, 2021. The new policy, announced by Chancellor Carol Christ on July 6, 2021, is in line with UC President Michael Drake's systemwide directive that all UC campuses require vaccinations for the fall 2021 semester.
UC Berkeley researchers develop new class of antibiotics
A team of UC Berkeley researchers has developed a new class of antibiotics that are effective against a wide range of bacteria, including those that are resistant to current antibiotics. The new antibiotics, called teixobactins, target a previously unexploited vulnerability in bacterial cell walls. The findings were published in the journal Nature on June 30, 2021.

UC Berkeley plans to hold a mostly in-person fall 2021 semester, with the vast majority of classes being taught in person.
